Malta is a small, European island-country of 475.000 people, located in the Mediterranean Sea. The official languages are Maltese and English. Types of Malta Immigration. Terms and Conditions

There are two types of residencies in Malta, namely ‘Ordinary Residency’ and ‘Permanent Residency’ and the main difference between said residency types is country of origin, since Malta is an EU state. The second type, ‘Permanent Residency’ is open to everyone who wants to make an application. There is a third option since July 2013, called ‘The Malta Global Residency Program’ which is basically for investors.

Permanent residents do not need to live in Malta all the time they can come and go as they wish, there are no restrictions. Malta is a member of the EU and therefore is in the Schengen Area, so you can roam freely across Europe.

Who Can Apply for Malta Immigration

Ordinary Residency is only valid for EU citizens. As stated before, permanent residency is open to everyone. There are no restrictions regarding country of origin. If you are not emigrating from the European Union, permanent residency should be your choice for immigration.

For ‘The Malta Global Residency Program’ you will have to satisfy certain criteria such as purchasing or renting property (for at least 350.000 EUR and 16.000 minimum annual rent) and paying minimum annual taxes.

Required Documents for Malta Immigration

Regarding documents, first you will need to fill a residency application form, which can be found on Official Malta Government Website. Other documents you may need, varies depending on your choice of residency and your country of origin. But in any case, you will definitely need, passports or ID cards and two recent passport size photos.

If you are applying by post, you will need photocopies of passports or ID cards. Also, you will need to present your passport or ID cards, with which you made the application, when document is issued.

How to Apply for Malta Immigration

Applications regarding residency can only be submitted in Valetta, Malta. Department for Citizenship and Expatriates Affairs. You can also apply by post or someone can make the application in Valetta on your behalf. But when the document is ready you need to collect in person.

Procedure for Malta Immigration

Ordinary residence permit makes you a resident for 5 years must be renewed every five years whereas permanent residence permits makes you a resident for 1 year are renewed every year.

Minimum amount of time needed to gain citizenship by investment is 12 months. If you meet the requirements of the Individual Investor Program, you can be a Malta citizen in 6 months.
