Spain currently has a population of about 45 million people of which, 6 million are immigrants, the largest group being from Romania and Morocco. Like other EU countries, non-EU nationals, in order to stay in Spain for more than 3 months, need a residence card or some other kind of residence permit.

As most European Union countries, Spain classifies residence permit types depending on your country of origin. Temporary residence in Spain can be for a period longer than 3 months and shorter than five years. Authorizations for this period lasting up to five years, may be renewed per request.

Initial authorization for temporary residence without a work permit can be granted to foreigners who have sufficient economic means for themselves and if applied with, for their families.

Foreigners who have been temporary residents in Spain for five uninterrupted years and meet the conditions established by regulation shall be entitled to long-term residence. However, prior periods of interrupted residence in other EU countries, as an EU Blue Card holder will be counted as uninterrupted residence in Spain.

Who Can Apply for Spain Immigration

Applicants from all nationalities except for the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, wishing to reside, work or study in Spain must hold a long-term visa.

Skilled workers, investors, and applicants who wants to immigrate to Spain and has sufficient funds to live in the country without employment can get a long-term residence permit.

Required Documents for Spain Immigration

With the application, a completed application form, both copy and original must be submitted. This form can be found can be found on the official government website, or Spain’s Diplomatic Missions or Consular Posts in your country of origin. Documents vary depending on your choice of residency but in any case, documents regarding applicant’s identity and education must be submitted.

How to Apply for Spain Immigration? What is the Procedure?

You must apply in person at the Spanish Embassy in your country of residence. The general procedure for immigration to Spain is this; after getting your visa and visiting Spain, within the first 30 days of your arrival, you must apply for your residence permit in the province you are planning to live. The deadline for processing long-term visa applications by the Spanish Authorities is one month following the date of application.

Your initial residence permit will be for one year only. You must renew your permit after one year. If the conditions for your permit are not changed, your residency in Spain may be renewed indefinitely.
